Put Some Luck and Deliciousness in Your New Year's Bowl
For some of us, the fun of the holiday is New Years Day as opposed to the festivities on New Years. Black-eyed peas are a must for my New Years traditions, and since all the Black Eyed Pea restaurants have closed, I need a new place to get my yummy side dish of good luck. Some New Years Eve parties in Dallas and DFW will offer a small serving, but if you don't want to gulp them down with your champagne, you better make lunch plans for New Years Day.
Cotton Patch Cafe restaurants are open Sunday and the salty side dish is a regular on their menu. They have more than a dozen locations in DFW including Arlington, Frisco, McKinney, Flower Mound, Lewisville, and Grapevine. Some locations have a new dessert on the menu that's perfect for a new New Years tradition- Mama's Butter Cake. A few years ago, I made my family's version (Ooey Gooey Butter Cake) as holiday gifts for my family and friends as a wish for "richness" and abundance in the new year. If your locations doesn't have that lucky dessert, you can't go wrong with Dr. Pepper Chocolate cake.
Cowboy Chicken also does great things with black-eyed peas on a day-to-day basis. With eight DFW locations including Denton, Fort Worth, Plano, and North Dallas, it'll be easy to find a local place to eat your way to good luck in the new year.
For the tastiest treatment of the tradition, head over to Po Melvin's in Irving where the recipe is an age-old prizewinner from the State Fair of Texas. They clearly know the secret that bacon makes everything better!
If you want a little fun in your day or just some comfort from your New Years Eve hangover, get yourself to one of the Twisted Root Burger Company locations. While supplies last, they'll be giving away FREE black-eyed peas with their Western Burger (or any of their other great burgers and other menu items.) If you've made resolutions to try something new in 2017, you can order a fresh game burger, and if you're trying to eat healthier, there are salads too. If you've been living under a rock and haven't tried Twisted Root yet, I think you'll love this fun counter service place where they don't ask for the name on your order - they give you one! Last time I was there, I was Mila Kunis, and my Big Tex burger was terriffic! Their 10 DFW locations include Richardson, Roanoke, Carrollton, Coppell, and the one featured on "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" - Deep Ellum!
Whether you skip the black-eyed peas, open up a can of Ranch Style, or head to one of these places for your yummies, I wish you the very best in 2017. Happy New Years to you and your family, and may your year be filled with joy and abundance. I've got an exciting year planned and hope I can help you Find Your Happy In Big D and Around DFW!
